The 13th National Cornbread Cook-Off
Set in the foothills of southern Tennessee, the finals of the National Cornbread Cook-Off, sponsored by Martha White® and Lodge® Cast Iron, took place in South Pittsburg, Tenn., on April 25, 2009. The challenge? Finding the best main dish cornbread recipe in the United States prepared with at least one package of Martha White Cornbread Mix – and cooked in Lodge cast iron cookware. The 10 competitors served up competition with a side of warm, delicious cornbread and judges from across the country savored traditional and unique meal creations.

Grand Prize
Sonya Goergen of Moorhead, Minn.,
won the first prize of $5,000 and a
Five Star® Stainless Steel Range for her
Buffalo Chicken Cornbread with Blue
Cheese Salad. Just like Buffalo Hot
Wings, this recipe marries the spiciness
of chicken with the coolness of blue
cheese dressing.

Second Prize
Black Olive Cornbread Wedges with
Chorizo Tomato Gravy earned Gaynell
Lawson of Maryville, Tenn., second place.
Lawson took a new spin on an old
Southern tradition by combining Mexican
chorizo sausage with tomato gravy for a
Southwestern flair.

Third Prize
Third prize went to Jamie Martin of
Madison, Ala., for her Cilantro Lime
Cornmeal Dumplings in Chorizo Chicken
Soup. Her flavorful, Southwest-inspired
soup featured fresh vegetables, but the
star of the dish was unique dumplings
made of cornmeal, cilantro and lime.
